Legal Status
Cannabis in Barcelona is only legal inside private “Cannabis Social Clubs” (also known as “Social Cannabis Associations). There are around 400 clubs in Barcelona to choose from. However, you cannot simply walk into a club and become a member and buy the product immediately.
Despite the legal private clubs, marijuana is not allowed the way it is in the Netherlands. While Spanish law allows liberal use in private spaces, authorities won’t hesitate to charge you if you use weed outside your home or a licensed club.
If authorities catch you with weed in Barcelona public, they will most likely seize your product and you will have to pay a hefty fine, anywhere from 330-600 euros.
How do I Become a Member?
Existing members must refer new members—essentially, someone who can vouch for you. You must also meet a few other criteria, based on the specific club. Most clubs at the very least require you to verify your age (some clubs are 18+, others 21+) in the form of a valid photo ID and have a residential address somewhere in Spain. The club decides whether or not to require proof of the address you provide.
Some clubs in Barcelona also require you to provide other personal info such as whether you use weed recreationally or medicinally and how much you consume on average each month. Staff may ask you to sign a waiver stating that you’ll follow the club rules, so let it not surprise you. Membership fees range from 20-30 euros/year.
Getting Weed on the Street in Barcelona
If you are just visiting for a little while, or simply do want to join a Private Cannabis Club. Buying weed on the street might be your bet. The quality of the weed will vary depending on who you get it from. People generally consider hash to be higher quality, thanks to the region’s close proximity to Morocco and Algeria.
Prices range from about 8-10 euros a gram, with hash being cheaper. You can usually buy weed around the bigger tourist places such as the beach and the city center.
Cannabis Prices in Barcelona
Price and product vary club to club, but oftentimes product quality can rival that of top California strains, at a fraction of the price. At a good club, you can get a good-sized gram (1g-1.4g) for around 8 euros and a “dub” or double (2g-2.8g) for around 15 euros.
